English and Modern Languages student profiles
Carrick is studying PGCE Education (Postgraduate / Professional Graduate Certificate in Education) - Primary with the School of Education
I'd been working in the Teaching English as a Foreign Language industry for 15 years in Spain and in the UK, and I'd always really enjoyed working with children, so a PGCE in Primary was the obvious way forward for me.
The Brookes PGCE has an excellent reputation, and it also has a Primary Languages specialism, which attracted me in particular. By choosing the Primary Languages stream, I will be able to hopefully become a languages coordinator.
The course is very intensive, but it's great to learn a range of subjects again – it's like being back at school! I love maths now, which certainly wasn't the case before coming to Brookes! The school placements are great, and they build up gradually, and it doesn't take long to get stuck in and to see why you wanted to be a teacher in the first place.
Lecturers and my personal tutor in particular, are very supportive and genuinely interested in your progress. The other students have also been great – you get to know everyone in your group very quickly and everyone is supportive of one another.
I have one more placement to do before the end of my course, and I am busy applying for jobs. Hopefully, come September, I will be working as a primary school teacher. From there, I hope to become a Primary Languages subject leader and maybe an advisor on the subject in the future.
